Fashion & Design

Apparel, accessories, dimension, line, proportion, balance, unity, perspective, detail, rhythm, drawing, and painting are necessary elements as well as skill sets to inspire originality, imagination and creative possibility.

Textiles and Fine Arts

Truly the basis of clothing’s voice, Textiles and the Arts inspire, uncover, charm and amplify it.  Investigate and play with color, form, pattern, texture, repeats, resist,  depth and perspective so that your designs sing.

History and Fashion

Let history inspire, captivate, renew and delight you.  Seek to understand the truth within it; pay homage and respect to those whose intellectual property has come before, in lines and detail that have endured to stand the test of time.

The Creative Process

Look to see, train your eye to notice, to discern, to connect and compare.  Participate fully to renew wonder, whimsy, and charm; weave the inventiveness of a truly creative experience into your art and creations.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What knowledge should a fashion designer have?

A fashion designer should understand techniques to express unity, balance, proportion, emphasis and rhythm and work to strengthen supporting skills on a daily basis.  Like languages, if you don’t use it, you lose it.  As well, a designer must find ways to keep creativity awake and alive.  This can be learned and practiced much like mindfulness.

What is the greatest challenge for a designer?

Clothes can be practical, and fashion can be art.  The sweet spot is where the two meet. Practical, fun, appealing, innovative, clever, exclusive, exceptional, distinctive, matchless, irreplaceable wearable works of art are what each figurine sketch dreams to be.

Why is culture so important in fashion?

Culture is the development of a society, willing or not, like an onion with many-layered core at times with independent secondary or tertiary bits.  A timeline as well, a sine curve repeating itself; the exposure to other cultures affects and changes the flavor and taste in continuum, and people, born naked, need clothes.

Are fashion designers artists?

Yes.  Through and through. Problemsolvers, connectors, truthtellers, everchanging, lovers of the world.

Choose a workshop and apply.

Due to the limited number of places available per workshop travel venues and the logistics to assure the best dynamic, there is a $75 application fee.  If the desired workshop reaches capacity, the applicant is placed on a waiting list.  Once accepted the fee will be applied to the cost of the workshop. If not accepted the fee will be refunded or apply to another.

"An inveterate “re-purposer” who also loves adventure, I was lucky to enjoy both in September 2019 at the workshop on Nantucket Island. We spent part of each day absorbing the local culture and finding treasures at the Thrift Shop and consignment stores. Evenings were spent tailoring and restyling our daily booty for ultimate fabulousness. I would join Catherine for another workshop in a heartbeat. I knew we'd had fun, but no idea now MUCH fun!"

"Despite the pandemic, Catherine took the time to to teach me how to make a face mask via Zoom. She motivated me to take my brand new sewing machine out of the box and we actually put it to good use. Not only did she relieve my stress, we had fun! What an awesome experience!!"

"In 2015, I participated in Catherine's first Nantucket Fashion Workshop. There was a young textile artist who was an accomplished weaver. She wanted to parley her weaving into finished clothing to sell locally. Catherine helped guide her from basic pattern making to beautiful finished clothing. It was a pleasure to watch."
